The CCF Earth Awards Ceremony for both 2020 and 2021 years was held on Friday 4 June in the Big Top at Luna Park, Sydney. We are pleased to announce that both Chalmers Street Substation and Lansdowne Bridge Replacement received the CCF Award in their nominated categories.

Chalmers Street Substation Power Supply Upgrade – Category 3 Winner

The Chalmers Street Substation, delivered for Transport for NSW (TfNSW), forms part of the Power Supply Upgrade Program, which provides the robust and reliable power needed to facilitate future rail network expansion, including support for a fleet of air-conditioned metro trains.

Chalmers Street

Scope of Works

The project was constructed and commissioned close to the existing live operating rail system, in a densely developed part of inner Sydney and had to be fully integrated with new system interfaces to existing electrical, telecommunications and civil infrastructure and installations.

Delivery Approach

Management of the project required close communication and engagement with the community and key stakeholders. The project had a dedicated Environment, Community and Stakeholder Liaison Officer to effectively manage stakeholder engagement and liaison.

Sharing the site with Sydney Trains and working essentially along their access road for emergency maintenance vehicles meant that all work plans needed to incorporate a 15-minute Return-to-Services Action Plan.

TfNSW commended Abergeldie on their collaborative approach with the TfNSW project team, key stakeholders and interfacing projects to deliver Chalmers Street Substation. The success of the project was credited to Abergeldie’s positive engagement with TfNSW.

Lansdowne Bridge Replacement – Category 4 Winner

Lansdowne Bridge Replacemen was delivered for Transport for NSW (TfNSW) around 2km outside of Goulburn. The pre-existing bridge was at the end of its life span and access had been closed in 2017 due to dilapidation. Abergeldie constructed a new, two-lane, five-span concrete bridge with shared pedestrian/ cyclist facilities, along with road approaches, associated embankments and retaining walls.

Delivery Approach

Stakeholder management was key to a successful delivery of the project. Communication with TfNSW was open and frequent, and sharing a site office fostered a close collaborative environment where project challenges and setbacks were dealt with conjointly. Abergeldie also worked closely with Goulburn Mulwaree Council as they were performing roadworks in close proximity to the site as well as maintained close communication with adjacent landowners to facilitate land use for stockpiling, moving one land owners heritage stone wall due to a boundary adjustment and to ensure continued property access for reisdents affected by the works.

Abergeldie coordinated works and arranged alternate access to the site to facilitate the continuation of Council’s roadworks and further enhanced the relationship building assisting council to fix road damage occurring due to rain events.
