Abergeldie awarded New Dubbo Bridge as part of Newell Highway Upgrade

We are pleased to announce that we’ve been selected to deliver the New Dubbo Bridge project for Transport for NSW, as part of the Newell Highway Upgrade. The project is part of the Building a Better Dubbo Program and will ease traffic congestion in the area, improve access across the Macquarie River during flood events and provide economic benefits to the region.

The project involves construction of a new 662m, 20 span bridge over the Macquarie River, construction of 2.2km of new (Newell) highway and intersection upgrades between the Thompson Street/Whylandra Street intersection and the River Street/Bourke Street intersection in Dubbo, NSW, including intersections and adjoining roads.

Abergeldie CEO, Mark Bruzzone said “We are delighted to be selected to deliver this highly complex project to provide a safer, more reliable journey for road users and the local community. The construction crew is highly experienced and has been onsite since June delivering the new Dubbo Bridge early works which have provided great opportunities for local labour and contractors. We look forward to staring construction soon.

The project is a joint initiative funded by the Australian Government and NSW Government and is expected to be complete in 2026.

Alfred Street Bridge

The Alfred Street Bridge is a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Parramatta River between James Ruse Drive and the Gasworks Bridge. It will be the first true diagonal arch bridge in Australia, providing a striking architectural feature in the Parramatta CBD. The project is a key element within a network of planned pedestrian and cyclist improvements.

Abergeldie is currently delivering the new bridge for City of Parramatta Council, continuing our work for this client on landmark projects in the CBD area including the recent Parramatta Escarpment Boardwalk, also built alongside and above the River.

Scope of Works

Complexity

Abergeldie’s innovative methodology was adopted by the client. This included delivering the bridge during limited shutdown periods from one side of the river and using a 200 tonne crane to install the arch, with a temporary jacked-up barge in the River for support. This method eliminates constraints and safety issues of working over water, and removes the need for temporary headstock construction in the river and later removal. The crane also allows the bridge to be installed over the tops of existing mangrove trees on the banks, minimising impacts on the sensitive riverside environment.

The construction method also enables Sydney Ferries services to operate continuously on the River, with the exception of a limited shutdown period of only two to three weeks while the prefabricated steel bridge is installed.

Both sides of the River feature high-rise residential buildings. Works are delivered in daytime only hours and a high level of prefabricated steel components (including the diagonal arch and steel supports), and coordinated daytime transport delivery is minimising impacts on local roads and noise levels for residents.

Community Benefits

Alfred Street Bridge, once completed, will provide a direct connection over the river to the Parramatta Light Rail stop on the southern side, along with services, schools and recreational opportunities.

The completed Alred Street Bridge will not only be Australia's first true diagonal bridge but will also provide for even more of the community to enjoy over 20km of off-road paths along the Parramatta River.

Eastern Creek Roadworks

Abergeldie recently delivered the Eastern Creek Roadworks package of works for TfNSW to help to support the current and future traffic demands resulting from the growth of the Western Sydney Employment Area. The package of works included an upgrade and extension of Archbold Road between the Great Western Highway, Minchinbury and Old Wallgrove Road, Eastern Creek and the Enabling works for Sydney Metro West.

Scope of Works

The scope of works included:

370,000m3 of cut and fill earthworks over a 17ha. site to construct two earth pads for the precast yard contractors
Reconfiguration of the intersection of Lenore Drive and Archbold Road, including:
- stormwater relocations
- lighting adjustments
- median works
- right turn bays
- bus lanes
- new traffic signals
Construction of a new 500m long, four-lane dual carriageway (Archbold Road)
Construction of a new 300m long two-lane dual carriage way (Western Access Road)
Construction of a shared path on Lenore Drive and Archbold Road
Construction of detention and retention basins for each precast yard
Construction of 900mm dia. culvert and 300m long open drain
Relocation of Sydney Water main on Lenore Drive
Construction of service routes for utilities on Archbold Road (gas, comms, LV, stormwater, water main, NBN)
New street lighting to Archbold Road and Western Access Road
Fencing and landscaping works
Handling of contaminated material

Complexity

The Eastern Creek Roadworks package of works was successfully managed through a GC21 contract process. The project team were collaborative and open in their communication with the client, ensuring key project objectives and milestones were achieved.

Staging plans were developed to maintain normal traffic flows during the reconfiguration and signalisation of Lenore Drive and Archbold Road. High impact activities were carried out at night to minimise traffic disruption during the day.

With works undertaken close to significant Aboriginal Heritage sites, particular care was given to investigate and salvage Aboriginal artefacts with the assitance of an Aboriginal Heritage Archaeological Consultant

Extensive environmental controls were also implemented to manage significant open excavations and protect nearby waterways. Clean water drains were constructed around the high sections of the site, diverting water whilst numerous dirty water drains and temporary retention basins were constructed to manage several significant rainfall events.
