Repairs to dams from 2011 floods

Abergeldie have just completed works immediately below the spillways of Queensland’s Wivenhoe, Somerset and Borumba Dams to repair damage caused by overtopping and emergency releases during the 2011 and 2013 floods.
At Wivenhoe Dam, most of the repair works were to the recreational area on the southern embankment of the river below the dam wall. Roads were rebuilt, pavements stabilised, new canoe access tracks created and extensive earthworks carried out to stabilise and reprofile the river embankments.
At Somerset Dam, extensive remediation works were carried out to the severely eroded right bank of the Stanley River. Abergeldie installed a new reinforced concrete spillway training wall, carried out repairs to scours, installed a new access road, replaced guardrails and handrails and installed rock protection and rip rap to stabilise embankments.
Works at Borumba Dam included remediation of the dam’s concrete embankment toe, valve house, spillway and plunge pool areas, and reinstatement of handrails and access pathways. To stabilise the river banks and bed, rock rip rap was placed downstream of the spillway and steel reinforced rock protection was installed adjacent to the spillway itself.
At all three sites, care was taken to protect the riparian habitat. At both Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams there are important populations of Australian Lung Fish, both within the dam reservoirs and in the rivers downstream. The waters above and below the Borumba dam are home not only to Australian Lung Fish but also to the endangered Mary River Turtle, which is found only in this one location.

Abergeldie entered two projects into the QLD CCF Earth Awards which were presented on
Friday night (23 August). Redbank Creek Bridge was entered in Category 2 ($1 –
5 mil) and Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal Cyclone Yasi Repair Works was entered in
Category 4 ($20-75 mil).

We had already won two awards at the NSW CCF Awards back in June for Burrinjuck Dam Access
Upgrade (Category 2) and Ulan Ventilation shaft (Category 3).

It has been a fantastic year for Abergeldie with exceptional industry recognition for the
complex and diverse projects we undertake.

With three projects submitted for an award, The V8 Supercars Year 4 Set Up in Homebush, the Access Bridge at Burrinjuck Dam for State Water and the Ventilation Shaft at the Ulan mine for Xstrata, the three projects showcased the diverse capabilities of Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure.

Abergelide’s QLD entries for Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal and Redbank Creek Crossing Bridge have also made it to finalist status. The QLD CCF awards will be presented on 23 August 2013.

The first of the projects was Replacement of Blowers 1, 2 & 4 at Warriewood Wastewater Treatment Plant, including installation of associated pipework and valves. The project was completed 31 May 2013, on time and on budget. Current NFRP projects include refurbishment of sedimentation tanks at the Bondi, North Head and Malabar Sewage Treatment Plants.

Abergeldie looks forward to completing many more NFRP projects, building on our positive and longstanding working relationship with Sydney Water Corporation.

The project, to be carried out for Auburn City Council includes design tie in transition on Carlingford St and Auburn Rd to accommodate future widening of the road to four lanes, installation of all pavement, drainage, street lighting and supply and structural design of the bridge superstructure.

The staff are motivated to participate for a variety of reasons. Barry who has been a volunteer for five years says “I hope that this small effort can in some way help those less fortunate than myself. I enjoy the interaction with the people that we serve.”

The Abergeldie/OHL JV team has been constructing Stage 1 of the project being the new westbound carriageway. These works have included house demolition, clearing and grubbing, bulk excavation, soil nailing and shotcrete works, stormwater installation, construction of retaining walls, construction of a new 53m 3-span bridge over Second Ponds Creek, subgrade stabilisation works, placement of select material zone and lean mix concrete pavement base, installation and relocation of utility services along the entire length of the project.

Stage 1 is expected to be complete in July 2013 with the switching of traffic to the newly constructed westbound carriageway. Work to upgrade the existing Schofields Road to form the new eastbound carriageway will follow thereafter.

Burrinjuck Road upgrade is commissioned and funded by RMS as a response to serious flood damage (natural disaster repair works) to the Burrinjuck area and in particular Burrinjuck Road a number of years ago. The Abergeldie scope of works consists of slope and embankment stabilisation and remediation/erosion protection works to 11 sites along a 20km stretch of road. Abergeldie are currently installing geotextiles, rock gabions and rock mattresses to rectify future erosion problems. Works are due to be completed by the end of May 2013.
