Beecroft Pedestrian Bridge Project Installation

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) proposed to Construct a new pedestrian bridge on Beecroft Road and Downer Mouchel awarded Abergeldie the contract to construct the aforementioned works. A high number of pedestrians use the intersection of Beecroft Road and Copeland Road including school children and people with limited mobility. The proposed bridge would improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow on this busy road.

The new pedestrian bridge on Beecroft Road is approximately 50m south of the Beecroft Road and Copeland Road Intersection. The location connects the Beecroft Public School to the west with the Beecroft Village Green on the east. A high number of pedestrians use the intersection of Beecroft Road and Copeland Road including school children and people with limited mobility. The bridge has improved pedestrian safety and traffic flow on this busy road.

The works involved the following:

  • Installation of a new pedestrian bridge with lifts and stairs
  • Subsurface civil and structural works required for the bridge
  • Public and private footpath construction
  • Stormwater drainage adjustment
  • Removal of G4 barrier
  • Installation of barrier kerb
  • Removal and replacing of pedestrian fencing
  • Property adjustment

Pedestrian management also played a difficult role in the successful completion of the project as Abergeldie had to maintain a hazard free pedestrian walkway through our works site. This meant that access was restricted even further. Dedicated traffic controllers had to escort pedestrians where required during certain tasks (mainly concrete pours) that impeded any access to pedestrians. The biggest challenge that we faced on the project was access. There was very minimal access on both sides of Beecroft Road in order to construct the lift shaft and undertake minor earthworks and landscaping. Further to this, as Beecroft Road is an RMS main arterial road, the Road Occupancy Licence issued by TMC only allowed a 4 hour window for us to close the kerbside lane on both North and Southbound traffic. This proved difficult as deliveries, concrete pours along with other tasks that required works within 3m of live traffic, needed to be programmed to be undertaken during these 4 hour windows. With a tight timeline and an agreed opening date with RMS of the end of June, it was an excellent effort by all involved to get the job done.
