• Design, certify, supply and install new composite beam system to replace the load bearing function from precast reinforced concrete beams (headstocks)

• Remediation of the timber section of the boardwalk
• Supply and installation of bracing to the concrete piles
• Supply and installation of new stainless-steel balustrades on the timber sections of the boardwalk
• Replacement of existing timber deck planks with new stainless-steel Balustrades on Concrete section
• Supply and installation of new stainless-steel balustrade on the concrete deck sections of the boardwalk from the northern timber deck to the central timber deck
• Supply and installation of new stainless-steel balustrade on the concrete deck section of the boardwalk from the central timber deck to the southern limit of work

Safety and environmental management were primary concerns, as the works are being carried out at heights, above water. Floating boom curtains and catch nets have been installed to prevent construction debris from contaminating the water below the work zones. Remediation of degraded concrete structures was approached in two stages. Once initial concrete breakout was completed, a detailed inspection was made in company with the client’s project superintendent to agree on the dimensions and degree of degradation of the areas requiring treatment and the most appropriate methodologies and products for their remediation.

As manual handling required to position new beams and brackets was hampered by tidal movements, these elements were designed to be as light as possible. Even so, the beams were more than 6m long and each weighed approx. 180kg with the associated brackets weighing over 16kg. Heavy duty trolleys incorporating hydraulic lifters allowed for quick layout of beams on the deck ready for installation.

Also known as the Teneriffe Riverwalk, the Catalina Riverwalk is one of Brisbane’s most scenic walks in the inner-city incorporating some of Brisbane’s most historic sites ending at the Brisbane Powerhouse. It is used daily by hundreds, if not thousands, of locals and tourists making its maintenance integral to maintain the city’s vibrant nature. By installing more environmentally friendly fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) beams, Abergeldie and Brisbane City Council have ensured that the Riverwalk can be used for many more years with less maintenance.

The Teneriffe Riverwalk also has a major cultural significance, incorporating a submarine heritage-themed trail and historic buildings along the way. Passing the historic Goldsborough Most building and Barko & Co, a café formerly known as the Engine Room built in 1908, pedestrians and cyclists continue to Submariners Walk Heritage paying homage to the submarine base used during World War II. Abergeldie is incredibly proud to have been part of the remediation to maintain such a historic and culturally significant landmark Riverwalk in the inner-city Brisbane.
