Canberra Wastewater Network Access Program

Abergeldie was engaged by Icon Water for the design, fabrication, and construction of a program of works to access facilities at wastewater pumping and processing facilities across multiple locations across the Canberra Network.

The project is being established as a rolling program of works with an initial contract award for works across 24 sites, grouped into two stages, with the third stage of additional project sites recently contracted.

Three Stage Program

Scope of Works

Scope varied from location to location, but generally involved fabrication and installation of metal ladders, gratings, and platforms, and at some locations modifications to concrete plinths and support structures.

The scope included detailed site inspections, condition assessments, and measurements at each location to determine requirements, detailed design development and documentation, including workshop drawings, FRP construction of platforms and plinths, and supply, off-site fabrication, and on-site installation of steelwork.

Abergledie provided the project managers, project engineers, and site supervisors to effectively manage site safety and the efficient and effective delivery of these projects utilising both Abergelide labour and local subcontractors. Abergeldie led project safety, quality, and environmental activities to ensure projects were delivered, safely, on time, and on budget, achieving agreed-on Key Performance Indicators and Icon Water program objectives.

Community Benefits

The upgrades at each site aim to provide safe access for maintaining, repairing, and cleaning of valves, wells, pumps, flowmeters, and penstocks, enhance safety for manual handling by maintenance staff when opening chambers, and provide a safe working room in confined spaces when accessing equipment around the openings of chambers and manholes.

Icon Water is implementing a project for safe access upgrades across its water and sewer network, identifying sites requiring safe access arrangements consistent with current legislation and recent practice within Icon Water. The modifications required generally consist of installing new ladders, edge protection around pits, access stairs, access hatches, and providing means for emergency rescue.
